Trans in the media - my entertainment and research.

Over the last 6 or 7 years I have built a collection of DVD movies and books, as well as magazines, all related to the LTGBQ+ community and in particular to transgender male to female and some female to male transitions. Although most are (based on) real life stories, drama and documentary’s, a few are just fun comedies to watch.

My first purchase of books was mostly geared to the science, social and medical information that I was looking for, before I made my decision to come out the closet and start my transition. Although books don’t really give detailed medical information to prevent self-diagnosis and self-medication, they still give the reader plenty of material to do research on: read, study, think and come to a well thought conclusion.

One of my thoughts were that I was approaching the 50 mark. So would it be reasonably possible to undergo this big step going into transition? (Yes, it turn out to be the best decision I ever made)

Next my interest shifted towards watching, and learning from, other transgender individuals who have paved the way before me. Looking for inspiration, a muse so to speak. Then after that I really became interested in just “comparing” myself with others, who went the same route.

On this page I list all the movies, books, magazines and TV shows I owe or have watched. Not all are in the English language and from the USA, since I am Dutch I have a variety of foreign media.

A little note to the TV shows. The foreign ones are usually not accessible in the USA because of IP address restrictions, which can be taken care of with special software to make it appear as if your location is in another part of the world.

There have been a few times that I have been in the media while during, and after, my transition.

After one and a half year into my transition I had some personal and family issues. My friend notified NBC12 news channel, and they surprised me with a nice gift, and some time on the local TV channel.

Since I consider my transition to be completed, I am now focusing on advocacy. Hopefully I can use my experience to help others, and where better than at my work. I recently was invited by my companies corporate department, to join an LGBTQ business recourse group, including allies, so the re-launched group is named LGBTQ+A. The A stand for Allies. One of the things I like to take part of is for my company to be more visible, and create easy access to transgender and transitioning information, issues and policies. I am the 4th known openly out transgender in a company with roughly 25000 employees, but currently the only openly out transgender employed.

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - They've been best friends since their meeting a year and a half ago in a support group for transgender men and women.

Donnaca and Erin have helped each other overcome lots of challenges, but when Erin was faced with a triple crisis affecting her home, her bank account and her parent, her friend thought an Act Of Kindness would help.

The car specialist at the Acca Yard in Richmond, Va., was born in Dordrecht, Netherlands, into a conservative religious household with strict rules. She was assigned a male identity at birth, but never felt she was living her true self.

Eventually she got married, moved to the United States, and had children. She began working at CSX as a carman before later coming to realize she was in fact transgender, a female living in a male body. In late 2014, Erin decided it was time to begin the transition process and start living her true identity.

DVD Movies.

A little note to the movie section. Not all movies listed are in the English language and from the USA, since I am Dutch I have a variety of foreign DVD’s. In the USA they play on region code 1, in Europe code 2, other parts of the world have yet another code. Some are code 0, which means they are regio free and play worldwide. So I have DVD players that can playback in both codes, as well as the NTSC and PAL system. (Is SECAM still arround?) If you are interested in purchasing your own DVD’s make sure you are checking the playback requirements. I get my DVD's on Amazon, eBay and while on vacation in the Netherlands.

Boy meets Girl

BOY MEETS GIRL is a poignant, sexy, romantic coming of age comedy about three twenty year-olds living in Kentucky. Different for Girls

Lady Valor: The Kristin Beck Story

POSE season 1 (DVD set)

A young woman and newest entry to the stage of the New York City ballroom in 1982, Blanca Rodriguez tries her luck in walking a femme queen category. Looked upon by her idol Elektra Abundance, she walked and demanded her score from the judges. She encounters Elektra later, who comes to her defense against a small gathering of women, taking Blanca out for a meal and adopts her under her wing into the House of Abundance.

In 1987, Elektra and her children hide inside the Museum of Fashion and Design, taking a liking to an exhibit with royal clothing. After closing, they gather the displayed clothing and accessories for their performance at the ball, escaping through a window at the entrance and avoiding the police trailing behind them. Geared and ready for the category, the House of Abundance enter the hall adourn with the fabrics and winning grand prize before the arrival of police officers to cuff and take them to jail for the theft.

Elsewhere in Allentown the following day, the young man Damon Richards, an aspiring dancer, is confronted by his father for secretly enrolling in dance school and for the discovery of gay magazines in his room. Assaulted and dragged from the house, he is scolded by his mother for his sexuality before being disowned. Left on his own, he relocates out of town, moving to New York.

Visiting a clinic, Blanca is informed that she is HIV-positive; determined to leave a mark of her own, she takes on a lease on a rundown apartment before being confronted by Elektra on her push to establish a new house, being kicked from House Abundance.

POSE season 2 (DVD set)

And in Season 2 things get more intense and emotional than ever before. Soldier's Girl

Barry is a private with the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army, stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky while Calpernia works as a showgirl at a transgender revue in Nashville, Tennessee. Barry's roommate Justin Fisher (Shawn Hatosy) brings Barry to the club where Calpernia performs. When Barry and Calpernia start dating, Fisher, out of jealousy, participates in spreading rumors about Barry's alleged affair, which appeared to be a violation of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy which forbids discussion of sexual orientation of military personnel. Barry faces increasing harassment and pressure, which explodes into violence over a Fourth of July weekend after Barry easily beats Calvin Glover in a fight. While Calpernia performs in a pageant in Nashville, Barry is beaten to death in his sleep by Glover with a baseball bat given by Fisher. The film ends with a discussion of the aftermath.

Transamerica

The Iron Ladies

The Iron Ladies tells the true story of a Thai male volleyball team that competes in the national championships in 1996 with a team consisting mostly of gays, transvestites and transsexuals. Mon, who becomes the team leader, was a very talented player who constantly failed to be selected for various teams because he was gay. Jung, Mon's best friend, also experienced the same treatment but was always more optimistic about things. Their chance comes when Coach Bee is selected to put together a winning team, and she announces that the team will be open for all to tryout. But when the coach selects both Jung and Mon to be on the team, some of the more macho players resign in protest. In order to form a team, the coach asks Mon to find a few of his friends to join the team. They select Nong, a gay sergeant in the army; Pia, the transsexual star of a cabaret show; and Wit, whose parents don't know that their only son is gay.

The Iron Ladies 2

This prequel and sequel rolled into one is about a unique volleyball team composed of gay men, transvestites, and a transsexual. The teams gains attention as they win a lot of men's volleyball matches in Thailand. The team name is The Iron Ladies, and they live up to their name with their athletic prowess and their personalities. The team struggles with different opinions, personality clashes, and financial hard times, but they come together in the end because they are a team of friends -- for a match with their local rivals.

Manuela becomes the personal assistant of Huma Rojo, the actress her son admired, by helping Huma manage Nina, the co-star and Huma's lover. However, Agrado soon takes over when Manuela must care for Hermana Rosa's risky pregnancy. With echos of Lorca, "All About Eve," and " A Streetcar Named Desire," the mothers (and fathers and actors) live out grief, love, and friendship.

I am A Woman Now (Dutch DVD documentary)

I Am A Woman Now (formerly Casablanca Revisited), the first generation of transsexuals who had their sex change in Casablanca back in the mid-1950s to 1960s take stock of their lives. Do these pioneers feel like total women and did it give them the fulfillment in life they expected ? The women featured in the film were all treated by the same 'miracle doctor', Georges Burou. As long as these 'patients' paid, there were no pre-conditions, no questions asked at his clinic in Casablanca. A film about the pursuit of an almost unattainable dream, about the gap between its realization and the hard reality that sometimes follows.

I Am a Woman Now - Michiel van Erp. In 1956 werd in Casablanca een praktijk geopend waar mannen een geslachtsverandering konden ondergaan, zonder dat daar allerlei psychologische onderzoeken aan vooraf gingen. Voor zijn film I am a woman now (VPRO, 2011) zocht regisseur Michiel van Erp een aantal vrouwen op, die in hun jonge jaren als man door het leven gingen. However, when Lidia visits Fernanda in their new apartment and tells her that she is pregnant. At that moment, Fernanda realizes that she would never be the "complete woman" of her dreams, and her relationship with Gianni won't last.

Copenhagen, Denmark, 1926. Einar Wegener (played by Eddie Redmayne) and his wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander) are a happily married couple. Both are artists, Einar preferring landscapes and she portraits. One day Einar poses for a portrait of Gerda's while wearing a dress. This is initially done as a lark, as is the later attendance at a party dressed as a woman. However, Einar soon discovers that she is in fact a woman and over time prefers being Lili. At first she and Gerda try to have her situation "cured" but this leads nowhere (other than to many doctors trying to have Lili locked up as a pervert and/or lunatic). Her voyage of self-discovery will ultimately lead to her undergoing the first ever sex-change operation.

Paper Dolls

The plight of Philippine transsexuals working menial but essential jobs in modern-day Israel is explored in this documentary centered on the outsiders who finally found a place of their own outside the judgmental confines of their native land. Its borders closed at the onset of the second Intifada, Israel was forced to find workers who were willing and capable of performing the undesirable jobs previously tended to by foreign workers from Palestine. With tasks such as caring for the elderly and housekeeping left suddenly unattended, a number of Philippine transsexuals who had either been cast out of their homes or otherwise exiled from society as a result of their sexual orientation were quick to answer the call and seek out a better life in a new land. Though the task of looking after elderly orthodox Jewish men was by no means easy, Israel's liberal atmosphere allowed them the freedom to be themselves while also offering one night a week to perform in a Tel Aviv ensemble known as the Paper Dolls. Often viewed as substitute children by their elderly charges, these thoughtful caregivers are still viewed as outsiders, though they have finally found a place in society that will allow them to live out their dreams.

The eight-part one-hour documentary series debuted on July 26, 2015, on the E! network. The series focuses on the "new normal" for Jenner, exploring changes to her relationships with her family and friends. The show additionally explores how Jenner adjusts to what she sees as her job as a role model for the transgender community.

In its first season, critical reception of I Am Cait was generally positive. Jazz Jennings, a South Florida teen, was assigned male at birth. Aged 4, Jennings was diagnosed with gender dysphoria in childhood, making her one of the youngest publicly documented people to be identified as gender dysphoric. Genderlegs vrouw, transman, wij….en toen? Vertellen wat ze altijd heeft geweten betekent dat ze wordt doodgeslagen. Niet vertellen en doen alsof betekent dat ze wordt doodgezwegen. Zichzelf zijn en taboes doorbreken, maakt zijn transitie tot een slechte B-film. 'Hij' zat in het lichaam van een 'zij'. Hij ontmoet iemand die daar een boek over wil schrijven, om anderen te helpen en het taboe van transgenders te doorbreken. Vastbelsoten om aan de wereld te laten zien dat ze doodnormale mensen zijn. Met een normaal leven, normale vrienden en normale seksd. Zij had nooit kunnen bedenken, dat het schrijven van dit boek, zulke verstrekkende gevolgen zou hebben! Erica de Winter schrijft met Genderlegs haar eerste boek. Een verhaal over getrouwd zijn met een transman. Niets bijzonders zou je zeggen maar haar verhaal bewijst anders. Lezers die het lazen, reageerden vol ongeloof, emotioneel, begrijpend, verontwaardigd en lyrisch.

In dit boek Wordt mijn zoon mijn dochter? beschrijft Lea het leven van haar kind, dat als een jongen geboren is.
